fast food chicken chain from South Africa known just as much for its controversial ad campaigns as its spicy chicken offings is forecast to become the next major global foodservice chain to rival US-based mega chains.
According to international market research group Euromonitor, Nando’s — which serves a mash-up of Portuguese and African-style spicy chicken — is the top food service chain to watch this year, as it continues to expand its global reach and become a rival player for KFC.
Since opening its first location in a suburb of Johannesburg in 1987, the chicken chain has set up outposts in 25 countries including Australia, Canada, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Singapore and the UK. Its first US location opened in 2008.
In 2010, sales were valued at $839 million, up 60 percent from 2007.
Their signature flavor is an Afro-Portuguese style chicken in a Peri-Peri sauce (also known as Piri Piri), a spicy, chili pepper and vinegar-based marinade.
